When her course takes a turn for the worse she ultimately steps into the role as the hero of her own story.
I had to take a break and remember that it wasn’t real, that I really didn’t need to find someone and smash their head in. Kennedy skillfully elaborates this sentiment in this Raw story of two kindred spirits, misfits in the world. It boggled my mind by the fact that YES, this book is FICTION, but the circumstances and the events that go on within the story is someone else’s reality, and that my friends, is scary as hell. The strength, the hope, and that determination of surviving against all odds is fierce and possessive in the face of fear, hurt and pain.Nothing I say in this review will even come close to telling you how truely amazing and remarkable this story truely is.
A bad decision, years of regrets, a love that could never be, but for the dream that kept them alive! I had to put my kindle down a couple of times because of the powerful emotions this book was making me feel. Well, if not for all of the reasons above, you will certainly find out for yourself within a few minutes of reading it. My heart is scattered into a million pieces, please excuse me while i try to pick up all the pieces from the floor and put them together in a semblance of something I can cope with. I hyperventilated, my eyes were very puffy, I couldn't breathe for a couple of seconds and felt like someone was slowly and painfully taking my heart apart.Long Shot is an book that is going toward the top of my favorites for 2018 and that I recommend to all. I understood where she was coming from with her past with her mom as well as her past with Caleb, but I didn't like how she treated the H or behaved at times.
Check your trigger warnings because this story is heavy, and it's so well written that you feel - FEEL - all of her pain and self doubt, and despair. One recurring theme that I’ve noticed in this authors novels has got to be the ”missed connections” angle she always invokes. None for Caleb, the obvious villain of the story, parading his girlfriend/prize to spite his nemesis. If I could just watch this one in the eye of her storm, in this crisis of her pleasure, it would be enough. MAJOR trigger and content warnings for a lot of graphic rape, stalking, being trapped, and a lot of very graphic physical, emotional, and mental abuse.I can't emphasize this enough, and I am not one to really give trigger warnings often but this book absolutely necessitates it. When August re-enters her life, the world seems briefly bright again, but Iris's darkest nights are not over yet. Instead, I'm going to let Kennedy's beautiful prose and her magnificent characters sell this book for me. After the brutality she faced with Caleb, it was a love that helped her discover what a real relationship should feel like.
With the connection these two have, you won't even have any space in your heart to deny they're meant to be. Her strength, determination and survival are firmly encased in a story about love, a love that readers will long to see flourish. August was just looking to blow off some steam, but he wasn’t planning on meeting someone who he would never forget. In this parallel universe, at this second-chance juncture, I turn right instead of choosing wrong… and there only there, we are together. And as I work to get there, I hope I can carry these characters with me, close to my heart, through the happy times and the bad times, so that I never forget the moment I felt truly alive reading this book.Ok, I need to stop here because I could spend all day re-reading and sharing all the highlights I have of all the delicious things that came from August. Yeah, well, when you can’t have what you really want,” I say, locking our eyes together, willing her not to look away, “you settle for whatever’s available. August is perhaps written too much as a saint but given how dark this book gets at times, his endless light is very much needed so I will forgive the author for his sometimes unrealistic perfection. Nothing is sugarcoated and the actions and choices that are made feel real and true to the characters.
