About this deal

I just wish that the book had stuck to a smaller story - more minor magic, more sourdough starter and animated cookies, less of full-scale enemy invasion and magical powerhouse displays. Or real life and any number of groups who can be used to focus attention away from whatever an administration doesn’t want people to look at. I liked the Duchess, and the fact that this anti-establishment book clearly demonstrates how absolute power isn’t absolute and is also fallible. The story is abominably fluffy at times, but it is quite marvellously darkly dark for the most part. Often charming and personable animals are part of both authors’ formulas, but here instead of an animal sidekick we have animated gingerbread men and other bakery products with minds of their own, not to mention Bob the belching sourdough starter.

A] knack for creating colorful, instantly memorable characters, and inhuman creatures capable of inspiring awe and wonder. Puede hechizar masa, pan y hombres de jengibre y cuando la ciudad en la que vive empiece a correr peligro va a darse cuenta que con eso va a tener que ser suficiente para defender lo que ama. And happens to think that dying with mismatched socks on is not very cool at all (which I am sure is something we can all wholeheartedly agree on), for three.Creo que la autora llegó a un buen balance de lo que es dirigir un libro a niños/pre adolescentes pero no por eso endulzarlo de más. Bob the carnivorous sourdough starter was a definite favorite, along with the gingerbread man familiar and Spindle the pickpocket were the main secondaries, along with Knackering Molly who can raise dead horses and is a touch not all there, and Mina’s aunt and uncle.

Kids should not be saving the world and fixing mistakes of careless adults, and yet sometimes life does not care what you think, and adults make stupid choices and let you down — even if you are young and careful and try your best to be sensible and follow the rules.

What is visceral is the amazing descriptions, the smells, sights and textures that pop out of this book, as the characters crawl through, over and around the story. I’m quite happy the story is finished and offered a satisfying ending but I would definitely not be opposed to the further adventures of Mona or her friends. She has been nominated for the World Fantasy and the Eisner, and has won the Hugo, Sequoyah, Nebula, Alfie, WSFA, Cóyotl and Ursa Major awards, as well as a half-dozen Junior Library Guild selections.
