About this deal

Michael Morpurgo and Michael Foreman chart a twentieth- century history of Flying Scotsman through Iris’s story, which travels through her work in the second world war, to the train’s international journeys too. It is the story of a little girl in the early 20th century whose father drives the flying Scotsman across the country. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! It courses from early twentieth- century through wartime, when Iris is ‘ in her 20’s’ and ‘ the Second World War came’. The picture book is perfect for train buffs of all ages over five and makes for great reading with parents, grandparents, guardians and teachers.

An inspiring tale from Michael Morpurgo and Michael Foreman celebrating the world's most iconic train, Flying Scotsman, and its greatest fan, a young girl named Iris. With family at its heart, the story is warmly written and joyously illustrated by national treasures Michael Morpurgo and Michael Foreman. This book tells the inspiring tale of a young woman following her dreams in the golden age of steam travel – with beautiful illustrations throughout. But each time Flying Scotsman pulls away, Iris wishes more than anything that she could be in the driver’s cab, just like her dad. Morpurgo was awarded an OBE in 2007 and a knighthood in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. He has written more than 150 books, including the internationally celebrated War Horse , and was appointed Children’s Laureate in 2003.

Published in association with the National Railway Museum, York, Flying Scotsman and the Best Birthday Ever takes readers on a journey through the golden age of steam travel, paying tribute to the women who kept the railways running during the Second World War. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It seems that every birthday Iris and her mother would ‘stand- on the platform, hearing doors slamming and whistles blowing, watching the flag waving‘. Her dad is the famous train’s driver, and every year her favourite birthday treat is a trip to see him at work. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned.
