Give Us a Clue [DVD]
About this deal
I’m not sure how they’re chosen, but many seem very pushy, outspoken and full of themselves - more like prototype Big Brother contestants than the timid and endearingly awkward types usually seen on game shows of this era.
The previous format meant that those furthest away from the captains usually only had one go, while the higher-billed celebs nearer the captain had two. Eight episodes were not included due to the appearances of three celebrities convicted of sexual abuse offences under Operation Yewtree in the 2010s. This version of the format feels like they tried to find a way to include the audience, but it doesn’t quite fully fit. This is a Region 2 (England and Europe) DVD and will only play in Australia and New Zealand if you have a MULTI-REGION DVD player or a Region 2 DVD player. The Company reserves the right to change these conditions from time to time as it sees fit and your continued use of the site will signify your acceptance of any adjustment to these terms. My mum and me were avid viewers of the original run, so I was thrilled to hear the first five years’ worth of episodes were being made available in a 13-disc DVD set. This round is more enjoyable because Parky mostly manages to restrain himself from interference and lets Kenny do his thing. It’s an incredible roster of legends including Beryl Reid, Max Wall, Nicholas Parsons, Kenny Everett, Kenneth Williams, Richard O’Sullivan, Barbara Windsor, Diana Dors and so many more! For a show with a lot of physical movement, the frame rate isn’t too jarring, making it a pleasant watch. As much as Parky's avuncular charms brings a certain cosiness to the proceedings, there are now far too many rounds that are won only because he's handing them the answers. On one infamous edition of the programme, the male non-celebrity was handed the title he had to mime on a card by host Michael Aspel, but, rather than read the title, he read the wrong side of the card, on which his name was printed. Within seven or eight years she'd be a name on both sides of the Atlantic and would have given us The Simpsons.Pre-empting the audience's question about how they get such a lineup, Parky said they'd economised by keeping it in the family, with Richard O'Sullivan bringing his "daughter" and Parky himself bringing "the wife". This Company does not however exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by its negligence. I liked the previous version which had "live" footage of each person waving or chatting after the show, but the tweaked version does help it feel a little more modern. All episodes I’ve watched so far recently have been from the Michael Aspel/Una Stubbs/Lionel Blair era, with the earliest series utilising a re-recording of Alan Hawkshaw’s Chicken Man as its theme (the library piece is best known as the theme from Grange Hill). It adds a bit of sturm und drang to the proceedings, but feels a bit overdramatic sometimes when it's something she can easily do in under a minute.
