About this deal

If you connect wirelessly, whether directly or via an access point, multiple devices can access the device simultaneously and there’s no need for cables; connecting via a shared access point also means your device still enjoys internet connectivity (assuming the access point also does), but data transfer to and from the drive will be slower than a direct connection. Within here you’ll find folders labeled by date, and within these, folders labeled by time, and finally within those, a folder with the card identification name which itself contains the actual backup itself. Keep in mind that the same four LED lights on the top left side of the unit that are used to check the charge progress are also used during the SD card backup process. technology, you get fast performance for smooth streaming, wireless image transfers from a compatible camera and quick editing with a connected tablet or laptop.

You can either do this using the free WD My Cloud app for Android or iOS smartphones and tablets, or via a web browser on a computer. If you need to go through large folders of images and possibly make selections of the best ones while on the road, you’ll definitely want to use a tablet instead like an iPad. The WD My Passport Wireless SSD has one more trick up its sleeve: it can be used as a wireless media server, dishing-up photos, music and videos to compatible players.

Once power is connected, the four LCD indicator lights will blink and provide information on how much charging is left to do.

Each bar represents roughly 25%, so if you see three bars light up and the fourth one flashing, it means that the charge is currently above 75%. Since I often end up taking a power bank with me when traveling, I can now skip it and bring this gadget instead.

If the drive is already connected to a shared access point, say in a home or office, then your phone or tablet should be able to talk to it via the app straightaway. Great review, but I have one question that WD’s foreign-based Tech Support has had trouble answering…If one desires redundant backup in the field, can data on the My Passport Wireless be copied to an external HD without an accompanying laptop? While I previously did not consider the WD My Passport-series devices for my backup needs when traveling, the latest Wireless SSD version is something I would certainly consider for my own needs and recommend to other photographers. Once the backup is done, all four lights should be lit up and the Wireless SSD light should stop blinking. In contrast, the My Passport Wireless drives are entirely self-contained devices with their own built-in rechargeable battery as well as Wifi allowing you to connect directly to them wirelessly with a phone, tablet or computer (whether peer to peer or via a shared access point). Unfortunately, as cool as adding a cloud service might sound, I did not find it to be of much use for a number of reasons. I am happy to report that it performed significantly faster, at just 14 minutes at 31 seconds – about three times faster than the Gnarbox.

In either case, you’ll need to switch on the drive and connect your device to its Wifi access point – the My Passport Wireless SSD broadcasts two Wifi networks, one at 5GHz for speed and the other at 2. Combined with the VLC app, you can watch pretty much any kind of video file, and I'm now no longer confined by the limited storage left on my iPad and can take enough stuff on the SSD so I’ll always have something to watch no matter how long the trip. For a photographer wanting to skip a laptop, it would make sense to bring both the main unit and the power bank. For example, if you have a Dropbox account, you can install the Dropbox service and browse through your Dropbox content. The WD My Passport Wireless SSD may work quite happily as a wireless or wired storage device for computers, but it’s also designed for those who want to leave their laptop at home and access their content via a smartphone or tablet.
