About this deal

It's a fact you don't want to hear, but even the best waterproof cycling jackets and the best waterproof cycling trousers will begin to work less effectively over time. The two brands make a comparable range of products, including the basic washes and re-proofers described above. Other brands to look out for include Fibertec from Germany and Decathlon’s Forclaz, while some clothing brands like Endura and Assos sell their own care products. The TX Direct Wash In can be used in exactly the same way as the Tech Wash and can revive breathability to fabrics without wicking liners.

Re-waterproofing your technical cycling kit should usually be a two-stage process and we explain how best to keep your kit in tip-top condition, and what the best waterproof treatments are. Paul started writing for Cycling Weekly in 2015, covering cycling tech, new bikes and product testing. The Tech Wash is really easy to use, you just add it as a normal detergent in your washing machine (or hand wash if you’re that way inclined).

Neither were pleasant, especially when caught out miles from anywhere and while walking for many hours. We tested this on an old, well-loved jacket, which would previously get saturated immediately in the rain. I’ve subjected these to a bit more spot cleaning and used the reproofing spray to save putting the whole jacket through the machine again.

Spot cleaning before washing and using the Spray-On re-proofing treatment has really enhanced the quality of the re-proofing on even the dirtiest and most worn bits of our tester's jackets. Where there have been spots that haven’t completely reproofed, closer inspection has shown some residue dirt. All you have to do is fill two caps full of the liquid, pop it in the washing machine with the garment and hit start on a full cycle as you would with regular detergent. She's not just confined to the trails though and regularly rides - and occasionally races - on gravel and road too. Of course, I do have other jackets that would work a treat while out on the hills in Scotland but I like to have a back-up, and sometimes you just want to wear a jacket that you have come to love. No, don’t worry, this blog isn’t about anything personal – it’s about the state of my old walking jacket! The progression to this state had been slow but it was undoubtedly aided by the long use of a rucksack, which rubbed at the shoulders, back and waist of my jacket. As with any normal detergent, I found I needed to spot treat and give a bit of a scrub to particularly mucky areas of kit (as a mountain biker, plenty of my waterproofs have a healthy amount of mud ingrained to them). This comes in a little more expensive than Endura's Cleaner and Re-Proofer but will actually work out much cheaper as you don’t need to re-proof every wash and can use the spray for spot treatments. Instead the waterproofing solution actually revitalised the jacket and trousers to the extent that the mud, splashes and rain just beaded on the surface of the clothes and ran off.

Rather than an arbitrary 3-4 months or annual schedule, Nikwax recommend to treat the garments when the water no longer beads on the outside of the fabric, or if the garment is 'wetting out' i.Dosing, and therefore the cost per treatment, varies on the hardness of your water and how many re-washes you need per reproofing.

Fiona Russell, better known as Fiona Outdoors, is a well-respected journalist based in the Scottish Highlands. It's effective at stopping both waterproof garments like Gore-Tex shell jackets and softshell products like Castelli Nanoflex from wetting out and so keeps them working well, although the treatment doesn't seem to last as long as the box-fresh water repellency - which is generally true of cleaners and reproofers and isn't unique to Grangers products. As the water doesn’t spin out of waterproofs as it does in normal clothes, it’s worth having a bowl ready when you pull the jacket out of the machine and hanging over the bath to save a soggy carpet as it drip dries. Direct are both really easy to use: measure out, send your clothes through the washing machine a couple of times et voila!I won’t know for a while whether the waterproofing lasts and I doubt the re-waterproofing technique makes the jacket and trousers as good as when bought new but if you’re looking to revitalise your waterproof garments then Nikwax is certainly a budget-friendly way to go. Dirt doesn’t feature the same water repellent capabilities as the fancy fabric of your jacket and can attract moisture into the fibres. He’s been riding gravel since before gravel bikes existed too, riding a cyclocross bike through the Chilterns and along the South Downs. Once the garment has been washed, you’ll need to tumble dry it or (lightly) iron it to activate the waterproofing.
