The pink-headed duck was much sought after by hunters and later as an ornamental bird, mainly because of its unusual plumage. Winter is also a great time to see these birds at their very best, with the drakes in fresh and beautiful plumage. An elegant, slim duck, the males have unmistakeable long tail feathers and a chocolate-coloured head. The gadwall is a fairly common, large dabbling duck, similar in shape to the mallard, with a square head, steep, sloping forehead, and slim bill.

The head are neck are very dark green with a vivid red spoon-shpabill that curves upward and a large basal knob. The males are completely black, while the females are brown with paler cheeks that stand out over some distance.
